Poker rules — Texas Hold'em from the ground up
How No Limit Texas Hold'em works, what hands beat what and a basic strategy primer.

Texas Hold'em is poker's most played variant and the backbone of the World Series of Poker. You get two private hole cards, five community cards are dealt in three rounds, and you try to build the best five-card hand. The rules are simple — the strategy is what makes the game lifelong.
The four streets
Pre-flop: every player gets two hole cards. The player left of the dealer button posts the small blind, next the big blind. Then players act in turn: fold, call or raise. Flop: three community cards. New betting round. Turn: a fourth community card. Another round. River: a fifth and final community card. Final round — then hands are shown and the best wins.
No Limit lets you bet your entire stack any time. Limit caps each bet. Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) is another popular variant where you receive four hole cards and must use exactly two of them.
Hand ranking from high to low
Royal Flush — A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit. Straight Flush — five suited cards in sequence. Four of a Kind. Full House — three of a kind plus a pair. Flush — five cards same suit. Straight — five in sequence. Three of a Kind. Two Pair. One Pair. High Card.
Position, position, position
Position at the table is one of the most important factors in Hold'em. Acting last (button) gives you information about every other player before you decide. Early positions (under the gun) force you to act blind to the rest of the table. Play tighter in early position and wider in late position — that is the foundation of every modern poker strategy.
Cash game or tournament?
Cash games use fixed blinds and chips trade directly for cash when you leave. Tournaments use a fixed buy-in, every player starts with the same stack and blinds rise over time. The winner takes the bulk of the prize pool. The two formats need different strategies: cash rewards patience, tournaments reward timing.
Key takeaways
- Hold'em has four streets: pre-flop, flop, turn, river.
- Position gives information — last position is gold.
- No Limit, Limit and Pot-Limit shift strategy dramatically.
- Cash games reward patience, tournaments reward timing.
